Why is Shahadah Important?
There are many reasons why is Shahadah important in Islam:
1. The first pillar of Islam
Shahadah is the most crucial pillar of Islam as it comes as the first pillar, which means it’s the fundamental of belief.
Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) mentioned the pillars of Islam, he said:
“Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakah, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.”
2. The gate of converting to Islam
Saying Shahadah is the main condition for anyone who wants to be a Muslim. Without pronouncing it, he/she is still non-Muslim even if he/she believes in Allah.
3. Demonstrating monotheism
The first part of the statement of Shahadah represents the basis of Islamic law which is admitting the oneness of Allah. This part denies polytheism and confirms that Allah is the only God who deserves worship.
4. Belief in the messenger of Allah
The second part of Shahadah confirms that the prophet Muhammed is the messenger of Allah. That means that belief in Allah should be completed through belief in the prophet Muhammed (PBUH) as the final messenger of Allah.
5. An important part of prayer
The Muslim who performs prayers every day says Shahadah daily while reciting tashahhud. That means that Shahadah is a significant part of such great worship as prayer.
6. A key to entering paradise
When Muslims feel that death is near, they say Shahadah to be their last words before death. They wish for a good end to their life and enter paradise.
Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) said:
“There is no one who bears witness that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, truly from his heart, but Allah will protect him from the Fire.”
7. An Important part of Adhan
Shahadah is not only a significant part of prayer but also Adhan (call to prayer) as the muezzin says five times a day.
