Tafseer For Kids: Blooming flowers can’t survive or grow in poisonous fields, and our children’s pure and innocent hearts can’t make it out soundly in this vicious and cruel world unless it take shelter through a powerful guard that wouldn’t allow it to go astray.

Only the Quran, and nothing but the Quran, can ensure our children’s well-being in our world today. So, we need to make the Quran the main source of light in their souls and help their minds become full of its pure fragrant meanings.

What is the Quran Tafseer?

The term “Quran Tafseer” refers to the process of explaining any obscurity or ambiguity in the Quran created by the complexity of the Quranic Arabic language, or a limitation of people's understanding of the Quran.

The word “Tafseer” is derived from the Arabic stem “Fasara”, which means to explain, clarify, elucidate, and point out. So, the word Tafseer in general aims at clarifying matters, and bringing their obscure sides to light.

Tafseer meaning in Islam isn’t any different; as the Tafseer of the Quran is supposed to bring about the results of intellectual meditation, and knowledge hunting that would lead to uncovering the secrets of the Quran, and shedding stark light on its meanings.

Quran Tafseer would usually include an explanation of the meaning of a verse, clarification of the context that accompanied its revelation, an argument of the reason behind its revelation, and highlighting its most important lessons to Muslims.

What is the Quran Tafseer for kids?

The Quran Tafseer for kids is the same process of explaining the verses of the Quran, their goals, the reasons behind their revelation, and what to learn from them but in an extremely simplified manner; so that, it would be easy for kids to understand and absorb intellectually.

So, basically, the Quran Tafseer for kids is an even further simplified version of the Quran Tafseer that was already attempting to simplify understanding the Quran for Muslims.

A Tafseer tutor who specializes in tutoring kids will have to explain the Tafseer for kids in easy and simple terms.

Tips for teaching kids Quran Tafseer:

Since understanding Quranic Tafseer for Kids is of great importance, we will offer you some tips to light up your road:

1- Beginning to get your kid educated at a suitable age:

Many people ask at what age should children learn the Quran? And it’s a valid inquiry; as it’s extremely important to begin to get your kid at a suitable age.

Of course, this is not a strict rule; because kids differ, and each kid is unique; so, we won’t be giving you a certain number, but rather some guidelines on when to teach them the Quran, and when to teach them the Quranic Tafseer.

As soon as your kid is able to speak, pronounce different sounds, and has quite enriched their vocabulary, try to teach them some easy and short verses. When they start their Arabic lessons, reading and memorizing the Quran will be much easier for them.

As for the Quran Tafseer, it’s advisable to wait until they are familiar with the Quran, and the Arabic language; because it can be a bit difficult to study Tafseer, and understand it academically without being able to read the Quran, and understand the linguistic meaning of its words.

2- Choosing the right Quran Tafseer tutor:

Choosing the right Quran Tafseer tutor is of tremendous importance; because they will build the base on which your kid’s education can bloom like a flower, or be destroyed in a hurricane.

This is why Sahlah Academy dedicates a whole course and a thriving group of tutors to the Quranic Tafseer course and gets them all to undergo training in learning how to educate young students, and how to come up with engaging educational techniques that help the kids.

3- Helping your kid revise his Tafseer lessons in an engaging way:

Helping your kid revise his Tafseer lessons in an engaging way is another important step in their educational journey. Instead of asking them to sit tight and revise their lessons with you, make it a fun addition to one of their daily routine actions.

So, while they help you prepare their breakfast, ask them to start a conversation on the subject, and discuss with them how to integrate that lesson in their daily life.

4- Learning Quranic concepts for children:

Your kid might find some difficulty studying his Tafseer lessons at first; due to being crowded with Quranic terms and concepts; so, help them learn these Quranic concepts.

As they are children, everything they do must be in a fun manner; so, you can prepare some educational games for them; such as: matching cards, singing songs, or making stories.

5- Learning more about Quranic stories:

Learning more about Quranic stories will clarify many matters for your kid, and will make their Tafseer lesson clearer and simpler.

There are many animation shows on the stories and the characters of the Quran that target kids out there; so, let them pick a show, and watch it with them. Make it more beneficial for them by discussing the content of the show with them.

All parents around the world wish to shield their kids from the insanity of the world we live in, and us - Muslim parents - know that to protect our kids, the only way is through teaching them the sciences of the Quran. May Allah grant us the ability to protect them.

6. Simplify and Relate to Their World:

Break down complex concepts into simpler, age-appropriate language that kids can understand. Use relatable examples or stories from their daily lives to illustrate the meanings of the verses.

Relate the teachings of the Quran to their experiences, emphasizing how the lessons are relevant to their behavior, relationships, and daily routines.

7. Use Visual Aids and Interactive Tools:

Incorporate visual aids such as illustrations, diagrams, and multimedia presentations to make Tafseer more engaging for kids.

Interactive tools like educational apps or games can help reinforce the concepts and keep the learning experience enjoyable.

8. Encourage Questions and Discussions:

Create an open and encouraging environment where kids feel comfortable asking questions about the verses. Answer their questions patiently and in a way that aligns with their comprehension level.

Foster group discussions or encourage kids to share their thoughts on how they interpret certain verses. This promotes critical thinking and a deeper understanding.

9. Relate Tafseer to Stories from the Quran:

Integrate Tafseer with stories from the Quran. Share narratives that provide context to the verses being studied.

Emphasize the moral lessons and values embedded in the stories, helping kids connect the teachings of the Quran with practical examples from the lives of prophets and other figures.

10. Incorporate Creative Activities:

Include creative activities such as arts and crafts, role-playing, or storytelling to reinforce Tafseer lessons.

Ask kids to express their understanding through drawings, plays, or short stories based on the verses they've learned. This allows them to internalize the teachings in a creative and meaningful way.

Teaching Tafseer to kids requires patience, creativity, and adaptability. Tailor your approach based on the age and comprehension levels of the children, and seek to foster a love for understanding the Quran rather than focusing solely on rote memorization.

11. Connect Tafseer to Positive Behavior:

Emphasize the moral and ethical lessons found in the Tafseer. Help kids understand how implementing these teachings can lead to positive behavior and character development.

Reinforce the idea that the Quran is not just a book to be memorized but a guide for righteous living.

12. Use Relatable Analogies:

Employ relatable analogies to simplify complex concepts. Analogies help bridge the gap between unfamiliar ideas and the child's everyday experiences, making it easier for them to grasp the meanings.

13. Provide Real-Life Examples:

Share real-life examples of individuals who embody the values and principles found in the Quran. Highlight role models from Islamic history or contemporary society to inspire and reinforce the practical application of Quranic teachings.

14. Integrate Multisensory Learning:

Engage different senses in the learning process. Use activities that involve touch, sight, and hearing to reinforce Tafseer concepts.

For example, you could have kids act out a story, touch relevant props, or listen to recitations that enhance their understanding of the verses.

15. Celebrate Milestones and Progress:

Acknowledge and celebrate the kids' achievements in understanding Tafseer. This positive reinforcement helps build confidence and enthusiasm for further exploration.

Consider organizing small events or ceremonies to mark milestones in their Tafseer journey.

What are the types of Quran Tafseer that kids are allowed to learn?

All types of Quran Tafseer are allowed for kids to learn, as long as the material content of the texts of Tafseer is made easy enough to suit the understanding capabilities of the little ones.

In fact, there are several ways through which Quran exegesis can be conducted:

1- Using the Quran to produce Tafseer of the Quran:

In this type of Quran Tafseer, the Mufaser (the one who attempts the explanation) uses verses of the Quran as guidance in understanding the meaning of other verses.

In Surah An-Nisa, verse 34, Allah Almighty uses the word “واضربوهن” when talking about how men can guide his wife back to the track if she goes astray. The word itself is understood by many religious scholars to refer to the act of hitting and beating, but other Islamic scholars have argued that it meant separation, and used the other verses of the Quran in which the word was used to point out that in all of them it didn’t refer to beating someone, but to the action of separating things.

2- Using the prophet’s Sunnah (PBUH) to get Tafseer of the Quran:

The prophet’s Sunnah (PBUH) offers a credible source of the Tafseer of the Quran; as in many incidents he would be asked about the meaning of a certain verse, and sometimes he would give a detailed clarification of what a Quranic verse has briefly mentioned.

In providing Tafseer of  "...Not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray." of Surah Al-Fatehah, Abu Huraira narrated that Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said, "When the Imam says: 'Ghair-il-Maghdubi `alaihim Walad-Dallin (i.e. not the path of those who earn Your Anger, nor the path of those who went astray (1.7)), then you must say, 'Ameen', for if one's utterance of 'Ameen' coincides with that of the angels, then his past sins will be forgiven".

3- Explaining the Quran through the Sahabah’s teachings:

The credibility of the explanations of the Quran provided by the Sahabah is proven through whom the Sahabah are, and the kind of life they were leading.

The Sahabah are the prophet’s companions, who had him (PBUH) as their direct tutor, teaching them how to become good Muslims, and how to practice the teachings of the Islam properly.

Therefore, whenever Al-Sahabah couldn’t use the Quran or Sunnah to clarify a matter, they would use their own understanding of Islam, and of the Arabic language of the Quran.

Ibn 'Abbas, one of the prophet’s companions  (may  Allah  be  pleased  with  him) explained verse 31 of Surah An-Nur: “And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments1 except what normally appears.” pointing out that: ‘It refers to the face and hands'.

4- Tafseer of the Quran by opinion:

In the case of Tafseer of the Quran by opinion, a well-educated, and well-read Muslim scholar would use their knowledge of the Quran, Sunnah, Sharia, and all the other Islamic branches of knowledge, in addition to their deep knowledge of the Arabic language.

This method of producing Quran Tafseer is doubted by many Islamic scholars; such as: Ibn Taymiyyah; because it relies on their opinions more than pure Islamic knowledge, not to mention that they are human beings whose knowledge isn’t complete or perfect, which means their judgements are to be doubted.

There are many examples of the Tafseer of the Quran by opinion; such as: “Anwar Al-Tanzil” by Al-Baydawi, and “Mafatih Al-Ghayb” by Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi.
