Why Do People Memorize the Quran?

People memorize the Quran, known as Hifz, for several reasons. It deepens their spiritual connection with Allah, brings abundant rewards, provides immediate access to divine guidance in daily life, fosters personal growth, and enhances discipline and dedication.

Memorizers often become leaders in their communities, contribute to Islamic scholarship, and actively participate in rituals. The continuous reflection on Quranic verses enhances understanding, contributes to emotional well-being, and exemplifies Quranic values.

Memorizing the Quran is seen as a transformative journey, bringing personal fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment to individuals and positively impacting the broader Muslim community.

The importance of Quran memorization:

The importance of Quran memorization for kids is immense, and unearthly great; as memorizing the Quran has many blessings that our kids experience in this life, and the hereafter once they set sail on this sacred journey, and we wanted to let you know of some of these many blessings.

1. A mighty defense against Al-Shaytan:

Memorizing the Quran offers our children a mighty defense against Al-Shaytan; as it sets a forever working religious and moral compass in their little, innocent hearts that would never lose the rightful way to heaven.

Al-Shaytan has no tricks up his sleeve before such a strong purifying force, such as recitation and memorization of the Quran. So, teach your kid to always take cover in the Quran from the wickedness of Al-Shaytan.

2. A secure shelter from Al-Dajal:

Memorization of the Quran is a secure shelter from Al-Dajal. Al-Dajal is a Fitnah that believers will have to go through before the day of judgment as an examination of one’s faith. The deeper one's faith is, the better are their chances to escape this Fitnah.

Allah has instructed us to resist the curious pull that will urge us to go and see Al-Dajal, and to hide away from him as much as possible, while using one’s faith as a weapon of defense against getting tricked by him. And what keeps the heart flooding with faith better than the Quran having an unrivaled position in our kids’ hearts?

3. A source of moral and spiritual elevation:

Memorizing the Quran is a vital source of moral and spiritual elevation for your kid. Basically, it’s like a never drying up river that satisfies your kid’s endless thirst for morality and spirituality.

The Quran is full of moral instructions that will help our little ones lead a fair lives, and peaceful interactions with others. Moreover, reading the Quran is very fulfilling spiritually, and how would it not when it’s the direct word of Allah?

4. ِA facilitator of other acts of worship:

The importance of maintaining the memorization of the Quran lies in how it can be a facilitator of other acts of worship, and help your kid easily do more acts of worship.

Faith is like a battery that you need to charge through acts of worship; such as: recitation, memorization, and maintaining the memorization of the Quran through revision. And the more you charge it, the stronger you get in facing Al-Shaytan and Al-Nafs Al-Ammara (the ill commanding soul), which allows you some ease in doing the different acts of worship.

5. A source of honor for the parents:

Your kid memorizing the Quran is a great source of honor for you, their parents, on the day of judgment. Allah has decreed that the parents of those who have memorized the Quran will receive a glamorous crown, and breathtakingly beautiful clothes.

The prophet (PBUH) has narrated in a Hadith that: “Whoever reads the Quran, learns it, and acts in accordance with it, on the Day of Resurrection, his parents will be given a crown to wear whose light will be like the light of the sun, and his parents will be given garments which far surpass everything that is found in this world. They will say, ‘Why have we been given this to wear?’ It will be said, ‘Because your child learned the Quran.’”

6. They can be an Imam in prayer:

Your kid can be an Imam in prayer when they grow up, which is a great honor that they receive only by virtue of their memorization of the Quran while they were young.

Our wise prophet (PBUH) has instructed this in a Hadith that says: “The people should be led in prayer by the one who has most knowledge of the Book of Allah; if they are equal in knowledge of the Quran, then by the one who has most knowledge of the Sunnah”.

The Muslim scholars have come to the conclusion that being knowledgeable in the Quran refers to memorizing it.

7. Intellectual growth:

Memorizing the Quran will allow your kid the chance to step towards significant intellectual growth. Through memorizing the Quran at a young age, they are strengthening their memory, broadening their horizons, teaching them on a variety of topics, and depending on thinking in teaching them about those topics.

You can help your kid achieve this intellectual growth we are talking about through discussing the topics of the verses and Surahs they study at home, and collaborating with their tutor to find suitable external resources to read with on those topics.

8. Personality growth:

Memorization of the Quran can lead to your kid experiencing personality growth. The Quran offers human beings a plethora of narrated incidents, and a long list of instructions, which will definitely have their effect on those who engage with it.

So, through engaging with the verses of the Quran, we will notice some personality growth that our little ones are going through. It’s almost as if the Quran is guiding them to find the person they would want to be in our place.

The Quran is the best companion, with whom we will truly feel our kids are safe. So, encourage your kid to make it a lifelong companion, who would never turn its back on them, or on us.

9. Preservation of the Divine Message:

Memorization ensures the preservation of the Quran in its entirety, protecting it from any alteration or loss. This oral tradition has been a safeguard for centuries, ensuring the Quran remains unchanged.

10. Spiritual Connection:

Memorizing the Quran fosters a profound spiritual connection with Allah. The act of committing His words to memory creates a continuous bond between the memorizer and the divine message.
