Tajweed Rulings For School Kids: All Muslim parents pray to see their kids crowned with the sacred crown of the Quran and to touch how their kids’ hearts are so attached to their Mushafs and the holy Quran.

Well, this will not come fully true without the Quranic rules of the Tajweed; for they are central to the recitation of the Quran, and all Quran memorization courses focus on teaching students Tajweed rules.

But what exactly is Tajweed? And why is it important to learn Tajweed? Well, we are here to answer these questions for you.

What are the rules of Tajweed?

Discovering the rules of Tajweed is fundamental for Muslims, as they guide the accurate pronunciation of the holy Quran in its original language. The Quran is to be recited in the precise manner it was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) by the angel Jibril. Let's delve into some key Tajweed rules:

1. Idhaar: Clarity in Pronunciation

Tajweed Rule 1 - Idhaar involves pronouncing sounds clearly and distinctly. Mastery of this rule ensures faithful adherence to the proper enunciation of Quranic verses.

2. Ikhfaa: Silent Sound Treatment

Tajweed Rule 2 - Ikhfaa instructs treating certain sounds as silent, refraining from their explicit pronunciation. This nuanced rule contributes to the accurate recitation of the Quran.

3. Iqlaab: Transforming Sounds

Tajweed Rule 3 - Iqlaab guides the transformation of the pronunciation of a sound into a different one. Understanding and applying Iqlaab ensures correctness in the recitation process.

4. Idgham: Merging Sounds into One

Tajweed Rule 4 - Idgham involves merging the pronunciation of two sounds into a single sound, creating a seamless blend. Mastery of Idgham is crucial for maintaining the flow and rhythm of Quranic recitation.

5. Madd: Prolonging Sounds

Tajweed Rule 5 - Madd focuses on prolonging the pronunciation of specific sounds, including the letters Alif, Yaa, or Waw. This rule adds a melodic and rhythmic element to the recitation.

6. Qalqalah: Bouncing Sound

Tajweed Rule 6 - Qalqalah involves a slight bouncing or echoing of certain letters when they carry Sukoon (no vowel sound). These letters are ق (Qaaf), ط (Taa), ب (Baa), ج (Jeem), and د (Daal).

7. Izhar: Manifest Pronunciation

Tajweed Rule 7 - Izhar denotes the clear and manifest pronunciation of specific letters when they carry Sukoon. The letters include ب (Baa), ج (Jeem), د (Daal), ت (Taa), and ط (Taa).

8. Istiqlal: Independence of Pronunciation

Tajweed Rule 8 - Istiqlal emphasizes the independent pronunciation of certain letters when they appear in specific combinations. Letters like ق (Qaaf) and ك (Kaf) are pronounced distinctly in such cases.

9. Ikhfa Shafawi: Concealed Merging

Tajweed Rule 9 - Ikhfa Shafawi involves the concealed merging of the letter ش (Sheen) when it is followed by the letters ب (Baa), ج (Jeem), د (Daal), ت (Taa), and ط (Taa).

10. Ikhfa Meem Saakin: Merging of Silent Meem

Tajweed Rule 10 - Ikhfa Meem Saakin pertains to the merging of the silent Meem (م) when it is followed by a specific set of letters.

11. Izhar Meem Saakin: Clear Pronunciation of Meem

Tajweed Rule 11 - Izhar Meem Saakin instructs the clear pronunciation of the Meem (م) when it is followed by one of the letters of Izhar.

12. Iqlaab Meem Saakin: Transforming Meem

Tajweed Rule 12 - Iqlaab Meem Saakin involves the transformation of the Meem (م) when it is followed by one of the letters of Iqlaab.

13. Lam Shamsiyyah and Lam Qamariyyah: Shamsiyyah and Qamariyyah Letters

Tajweed Rule 13 - Distinguishing between Lam Shamsiyyah (لشمسية) and Lam Qamariyyah (لقمرية) letters when they are followed by a Sun letter (شمسية) or a Moon letter (قمرية), respectively.

These Tajweed rules serve as the foundation for accurately and beautifully reciting the Quran. Whether it's achieving clarity in pronunciation, mastering silent sound treatment, transforming sounds, merging them seamlessly, or prolonging specific sounds, adherence to these rules is paramount for a meaningful and faithful recitation.

What is the history of learning Tajweed?

The history of learning Tajweed goes back to the time of our noble prophet (PBUH); because he was in charge of teaching his companions how to recite the verses of the Quran in the exact same manner as the angel, Jibril, has recited them to the prophet (PBUH).

However, during that period of time, the Quranic rules of Tajweed were only practical knowledge that is applied when reciting the Quran, and it didn’t have a theoretical framework that governs how it works exactly.

Later on, and specifically, during the third Hijri century, Islamic scholars specialized in the holy Quran decided to surround the practice of Tajweed with a theoretical framework that describes its application. Thus, teaching Tajweed was done in both ways: theoretically, and practically.

Is Tajweed obligatory?

Yes, the Quran reading Tajweed rules are obligatory to follow when reciting the Quran. Some Islamic scholars believe that those who don’t abide by it need to repent and start abiding by it, and reading the Quran properly, while others argue that applying Tajweed is extremely preferable, yet if one chooses not to apply it, they are not to be considered sinners.

Later, Islamic scholars came to the conclusion that the rules of Tajweed that make a difference in the meaning of the verse must be followed, but the Tajweed rules that have no effect on the meaning of a verse can be overlooked when reciting the Quran.

Yet, people need to be weary of some important points:

1- one must not overuse the rules of Tajweed to the limit that it wouldn’t be beautifying anymore.

2- it’s really detestable to pay all attention to applying the rules of Tajweed, with little to no attention to the intellectual meditation recommended while reciting the Quran.

Does Salah need Tajweed?

Yes, to perform Salah, one needs to recite the Quran with Tajweed. However, the must-to-follow Tajweed rules are the ones that change the meaning of the verse, and all other rules are only preferable to apply.

How long does it take to learn the Quran with Tajweed?

The period of time it takes kids to learn the Quran with Tajweed differs from one kid to another, and from a set of circumstances to another. Yet, generally speaking, kids will take up to two years of regular and extensive Quran classes to be able to memorize the Quran with Tajweed.

The rules of Tajweed are like a crown that completes the glamour of the Quran; beautifying it, and making it whole. So, don’t hesitate to add your kid to Tajweed classes such as the ones at Sahlah Academy.
